What started as a hobby has turned into an obsession. Boxing has not only helped me become more disciplined, but has taught me to be patient and courageous. It has been my outlet and my favorite activity to distress. My older brother is my inspiration, so naturally I wanted to do what he did. It wasn’t until after I graduated high school that I began to train.
While working/living with a family in Brentwood, I found a nearby gym that happened to focus on boxing. I was an active member for almost 2-years until I moved back to the San Fernando Valley to be closer to my school. Cal State Northridge has an incredible gym which features a boxing studio. It was there where I met my brothers’ former boxing coach who asked me to try out for the club team. I spent two incredible years on the team while also meeting one-on-one with a trainer when time allowed. (Bear crawl suicides as a warm-up were my LEAST favorite).
My time as a graduating senior was cut short due to the pandemic. All the gym were closed, except one — my garage. We still have the weights my dad bought back in the 80s, however my brother added a speed bag and a heavy bag a couple years ago. I’ve spent a lot of my free time training because it makes me feel strong, healthy, and fierce. Late last year I began training kids and teaching them how to box. I hope to continue to share my passion for the sport, and inspire others.
